FLEET WEEK!!!!
Sailors, Marines, Coast Guard men and women in town this week. It’s the 24th annual Fleet Week New York and it brings 3000 sailors, marines and Coast Guard men/women into town. (Nice eye candy, ladies!)
They arrived yesterday morning with the Parade of Ships moving along the Hudson River to the George Washington Bridge and back down the Hudson again. They had a military jet escort as they arrived. The ships will be here through Monday, May 30th, Memorial Day.
Friday is Military Day in Times Square and will feature the Navy Band Northeast Jazz Ensemble and the U. S. Marine Corps Band, all day from 9am to 6pm.
Saturday will be Marine Day in Battery Park with a day of entertainment and outreach from 9am to 6pm.
Sunday is the Annual Athletic Competition, Tug-of-War at Pier 86. This is from 2pm to 4pm and tickets are needed.
Monday, Memorial Day Ceremony and Pier Displays, will feature a fly-over of military aircraft and the Gazillion Bubble Show at Pier 86, at 11am. Tickets needed.
The USS Iwo Jima is one of the ships in town this week. The big draw for ship tours is expected to be the USS New York, the amphibious transport dock built with 7.5 tons of steel from the destroyed World Trade Center. The USS New York will be berthed at the Homeport Pier in Staten Island.
So come out and enjoy tours of the ships, the musical performances and tactical demonstrations of military maneuvers and show some New York love for our fighting men and women.
